Discover Ganghwado Nadl-gil(나들길 트레킹): A Hidden Gem for Trekkers in Korea

If you’re planning a trip to Korea and want to go beyond Seoul’s bustling streets, Ganghwado Nadl-gil (강화도 나들길) is the perfect escape. Just about 1.5 hours from central Seoul, this coastal trekking trail introduces you to the raw beauty of Korea’s west coast—where mountains, mudflats, rice paddies, and quiet villages blend into a peaceful landscape.

What is Ganghwado Nadl-gil?

Nadl-gil literally means “walking paths for strolling”, and on Ganghwado Island there are more than 20 themed trekking courses, each ranging from 2 to 20 kilometers. The routes take you along the seashore, through lush forests, and past historic sites like Goryeosan Mountain, Jeondeungsa Temple, and the remains of old fortresses.

Unlike some of Korea’s steeper hikes, Nadl-gil is designed to be beginner-friendly. Trails are well-marked, and many courses can be completed in 2–3 hours, making it ideal for families, casual walkers, or even solo travelers looking for a nature escape.

Popular Courses

  • Course 1: Peace Observatory Trail
Overlooking the North Korean border, this trail is a surreal experience where you can reflect on Korea’s divided history while surrounded by untouched nature.

  • Course 7: Goryeosan Azalea Trail
Famous for its springtime blossoms, but equally beautiful year-round with forested paths and panoramic island views.

  • Course 16: Coastal Village Trail
A peaceful walk through fishing villages and mudflats where you can catch locals harvesting clams at low tide.

How to Get There

From Seoul, take a bus from Sinchon Bus Terminal to Ganghwa Bus Terminal (about 1 hour 20 minutes). From there, local buses or taxis can bring you to specific Nadl-gil course starting points.

Tips for Trekkers

  • Wear light hiking shoes—some paths can get muddy near the coast.

  • Bring water and snacks since convenience stores are limited on certain courses.

  • If you’re visiting in spring or fall, expect some of the most breathtaking scenery in Korea.

Why You Should Visit

Ganghwado Nadl-gil isn’t as famous as Seoul’s Namsan or Inwangsan hikes, but that’s what makes it special. It’s quiet, authentic, and gives you a glimpse of Korea’s natural and cultural heritage away from the city crowds. Whether you’re a serious trekker or just looking for a half-day trip, this island path is a must try courses.
